Martin Luther King Against Segregation
Martin Luther King and Emma Goldman were the advocates of disobedience, but of different types. Martin Luther King is famous as a leader of movement of civil rights in 1950s-1960s. He was struggling against segregation and with this aim he went to Alabama and Birmingham in 1963 to watch the injustice there.
The leaders of black population tried to negotiate with Birmingham economic community, but all the promises were not fulfilled. There was nothing to do except taking some radical steps and direct action. The main aim of these actions was to influence the merchant community and make them face up to problem of segregation. King always said that freedom would never be given by the oppressor according to his own will; the oppressed must demand it themselves.
Everybody understood that struggling against segregation was not loyal, but there was not another way out. King himself said that there were two types of laws: just and unjust. Just laws are those, made by God and unjust are those which degrade human personality. King said that the segregation laws are all unjust as they alter souls and do harm to personality. They give the segregator the artificial sense of superiority and the segregated person has the feeling of false inferiority. In 1954 the Supreme Court made the decision about the abolition of segregation in public schools, because it was not morally right. King said that abolishing of segregation is the violence of unjust law. When people understand that they break some laws and it does not matter whether they are just or unjust, it shows the respect for the law. He strongly believed that when people break the laws, they suppose is unjust, and is ready to accept their punishment, for rising the conscience of the society about the injustice, is showing the obedience to the law.
