Why was Stremme and Gordon penalized and Hamlin not?
"I got to him coming off Turn 1," Hamlin said. "I drove into Turn 2, got to him, nudged him actually in the middle of the corner. I let go of him. He pulled away about a car-length, but then he slammed on the brakes obviously to let me know he was upset. I plowed him off of [Turn] 2 really hard.
"In Turn 3, I got to him again. He got really loose off. When I got to him and pushed him, I was hoping he was just going to come off the corner and straighten up. Instead, I kept my throttle on him and when I did, I spun him into his teammate."
After reading Hamlin's comments it is essentially an admission of guilt, also doing no less than what David Stremme and Robby Gordon did to deserve a 5 lap penalty each. So why the discrepancy?
Stremme and Gordon were trading paint for several laps, and when they crashed, it was obvious that it was intentional. Hamlin's incident could have been judged a "racing incident." It's basically a judgment call, and often the calls NASCAR makes appear to be a double standard, but there's not much we can do about it. I think they try to be fair over all.
What I don't understand it why everyone was so willing to overlook Hamlin's actions that brought him to victory lane. Yes, it was an emotional win, but he still drove a dirty race. I guess if you cry in victory lane, you can be a dirty driver, and all will be forgiven.
