New Dales Guest House Owners Making Their Mark
Tudor House, a guest house/B &B accommodation provider in Bell Busk near Malham in the Yorkshire Dales is enjoying a revival under new owners Bob & Sheila Marchant.
Built by the North Western Railway Company in the middle of the 19th Century as the station for Malham, it continued as such until closed in 1959. The closure was not without controversy and a campaign to save the station was led by the Rev. H Palmer from Kirkby Malham and a Mr W Sharp from Otterburn. It even included a plea for help to Bette Davis, who had apparently fallen in love with the building whilst filming “Another Man's Poison” in and around the station in 1951.
Once closed the building remained a private residence until converted to a guest house/B&B around 1980. Several owners have added to and developed the property until Bob & Sheila Marchant became ‘mine hosts' in September last year
Since taking over a major renovation project has begun, whilst still keeping the place operating for Dales tourists.
The installation of a new water main was delayed because of the snow over Christmas and the New Year but that has now been followed b y the installation of a new boiler and hot water system. Guest can now enjoy a lengthy shower or bath with out fear of either low water pressure or lack of hot water given them a sudden cold drenching!
Work on updating the décor in the public areas has begun and 3 of the bedrooms now look fit for a king and have been equipped with new flat screen TV with ‘Freeview' and built in DVD players, so even on the occasional inclement day guests can enjoy themselves whilst staying in doors.
Not that that was ever a problem with the cosy residents lounge with log burning stove, TV and CD/radio and the ‘Sun Room' or ‘Library' packed full of interesting books, maps & leaflets on the locality, the wildlife and of course the railway.
Although the weather doesn't seem to want to admit it, spring is just around the corner and that means the ‘Steam Engine' excursion season is approaching and there are several services planned to pass the back door, literally, in the coming weeks. The next station up is Hellifield and from there the line becomes that world famous stretch Settle to Carlisle, Ribblehead Viaduct and all.
Bob & Sheila are putting great efforts in letting the world know that Tudor House is alive and kicking and happy to entertain visitors from all parts, and their warm hospitality is beginning to pay dividends with, up to now, an unblemished record of reviews on ‘Trip Advisor' where with out exception they are receiving 5 out 5 from visitors who like to share their experience using this internet tool.
So if you are looking for a relaxing break in a real ‘home form home' in the Yorkshire Dales, Tudor House is the place to be.
