Getting to Know the Dow 30
The Dow 30, also called the Dow Jones or DJIA, is an important indice to follow if you're in the stock market and trading midcap or higher stocks. If you're trading smallcaps or lower, it's not as relevant. Perhaps the Russell 2000 is more your speed. But, this article is about the Dow 30, so let's rock n roll.
If you turn on CNBC or another top-level financial program on TV, you're going to hear talk about the Dow 30 and that's because it's collection of 30 movers and shakers in the stock market world. Everyone looks at it's movement as a sign for how the market is doing. When the Dow is down, Bulls get nervously optimistic. When it's up, Bears figure a crash is coming.
To be listed as one of the elite 30, a company has to "measure" up. In 2009, GM failed the test and was removed from the DJIA and replaced with a better company.

As you can see, these are well-known companies with a lot of money investing into them. There are critics of the DJIA though. Many think it doesn't really represent the market at all since it's just 30 closely tied stocks. And they might be right. Like I said earlier, it certainly has little bearing for the lower end of the market.
Investors can also invest in the entire DOW 30 in one sweep through exchange traded funds and derivatives. This is a great option if you want to really "play the market." Personally, I like ETFs and have used them to make money in the past.
