Adding Beauty Under the Hood
True tuners may not be satisfied with simply adding wing spoilers and custom headlights to their rides. Other areas cry out for customization. One such area is the engine compartment. There are numerous ways to customize and add beauty under your hood. You will find quite a few companies manufacturing custom accessories to help you give even you engine that signature, custom look. What can you find for use in this area? What are the most popular options and what do they do? Here are a few of the top choices.
Oil filler caps: Ditch that dull and boring oil filler cap and install a true custom option. You'll find a wide array of custom oil caps, in a disparate range of colors, styles and even textures. Aluminum is a popular option and provides the widest range of color choices, while brushed stainless steel and chrome are also popular. You can choose from branded and non-branded options to suit your tastes.
Radiator Caps: Why do you need a custom radiator cap? A high performance engine generates more heat than a standard engine. You'll need a custom radiator cap to contain the excess pressure generated by your engine. However, a better option is to install a custom radiator (make sure it includes the cap); this will give you a wider range of protection and performance, keeping that engine running cooler and happier.
Sparkplug Wire Covers: In many engines, your sparkplug wires are routed across the top of the valve cover, usually hidden by a plastic cover. Billet aluminum and steel covers are available to add style and flair. You'll find brushed aluminum, colored aluminum and matte finishes available for you style needs.
Valve Covers: Your valve cover is one of the easiest things to customize under your hood. It provides a great focal point when the hood is open and can be tied in with other custom options for a full color scheme. Many tuners choose to paint their existing valve cover; however, this option can be quite time consuming. Installing a colored valve cover is a quick way to add beauty (make sure it comes with a valve cover gasket).
Sparkplug Wires: Your sparkplug wires can also have a custom look. Rather than using colored overlays (tubing) on each wire, install high performance sparkplug wires for great looks and better performance. You can find a wide range of popular colors, from red to yellow, blue, green and many others.
As you can see, there are quite a few ways to give your engine compartment a custom look that will match the rest of your ride. However, as a note, you should only choose accessories from recognized industry leaders. This is the only way to ensure the proper fit and long lasting benefits.
