St Martins Church, Birmingham
The Bull Ring is the place where Birmingham originally began. There has been a church here for more than eight hundred years.
Peter de Bermingham, who lived in close proximity, set up the first market here in 1166. It is possible that there was a place of worship, simple as it may have been, here at that time. However, the first church for which records exist was built around the year 1290, by Peter's descendant, William. A sandstone figure from 1325, said to represent William, can be found in the existing Guild Chapel. This figure is said to be the oldest monument in existence in Birmingham.
The majority of the original 1290 building was demolished to make way for the current church which was built in 1873. Birmingham Architect, Alfred Chatwin, who also worked on London's Houses of Parliament, was the designer.
In 2000, the church's interior was altered to provide more light and make it more welcome to visitors. Changes were again made in 2003 with external restoration. An arts café, health & healing centre and training suite being also added.
The name of St Martin was from a soldier who was born in Hungary in 316. On a bitterly cold night he was riding through Amiens, in France, where he had been posted, when he came across a half naked beggar, huddled against a wall. Martin was so moved by the beggar's plight, that his immediate reaction was to take his sword and cut the cloak he was wearing in half, giving half to the beggar.
That night he had a dream in which Jesus appeared to him as the beggar and thanked Martin for clothing him, in response the young soldier got himself baptised. He later left the army and became a solder of Christ and eventually became Bishop of Tours in France. St Martin is remembered for his services to the poor.
