Should a driver be allowed to finish a race in a different car than the one he started?
First of all, I don't think David Gilliland himself should be punished. I highly commend him for taking over in Kyle's car, with Kyle's crazy setups, and still finishing the race.
However, I do believe that NASCAR should take away the winnings for the California race that the 71 car got. There are two main reasons for this:
1) It was determined BEFORE the race that Gilliland would take over for Kyle. Therefore, it was already predetermined that the 71 would be a start-and-park operation.
2) The 71 only does start-and-park with Gilly. When Bobby Labonte is driving, it runs the whole race (and near the front, I might add, which is more than the Yates/HOF #96.)
Now, I'm not one to usually fight against the small teams, but this was atrocious. And, if NASCAR was going to lay the smack down on Carl Long for his team's error, they need to be hard on other teams, too. The 71 obviously had no intention of racing Sunday, and something needs to be done about that.
I kind of agree with you.
But..............
If they didn't allow it there would have been 41 cars on the track (or less) at the start.
Should they have MADE Kyle drive the race sick, and maybe pass out and take out a stack of cars with him.
Besides, this may give DG a chance at a better ride. If he can drive Kyles wild setups, he should get a better team.
