What are the positives/negatives of taking a pit stop during a race in NASCAR?
sorry for a dumb question, i am still relatively new to nascar. Also, how does pitting during a caution flag work? thanks
Positives:
Fuel
New tires
Adjustments to a bad handling car
Clean windshield
Repair a damaged car
Giving the driver something to drink
Negatives:
Losing your track position, especially if you pit under green
Chance of making a wrong adjustment
Chance for a Pit Road mishap either with another car or with your crew making mistakes.
Pitting under caution is different only in the sense that the pace car is controlling the speed of the cars on the track. You won't usually go a lap down pitting under a caution unless your car needs extensive repairs. Pitting under a green flag will cause you to lose at least one lap. Cars lose or gain positions pitting under caution depending upon how fast their stops are. Also, when you pit under caution there are usually two waves of stops. The first wave is the cars on the lead lap, and the second wave is the cars a lap down. Regardless of when you're pitting (under caution or green), you want your stop to be as fast as possible.
Hope that helps! Don't feel bad about being a new race fan.....we all were once in our lives!
