Would you Hire Anyone in the National Guard?
My name is Lisa and I’m 22 years old from a small town in NY. I serve part time in the New York National Guard one weekend a month. I am currently unemployed, and desperately seeking work.
I’ve been home from my army training since the end of January, and started job searching in April for full time employment. But it seems that no matter where I go and put my application in, no one wants to hire me. At first, I thought it was because I was going to Italy for 3 weeks in June for some additional training I volunteered for months before. So at that point, I decided to wait till I came back from Italy in early July to give it another go. Well what ended up happening was that a week before I was supposed to go to Italy, I was told there was some mess up where my name wasn’t on the list to go. So for the next 3 weeks I stayed at my unit performing my annual training, and started applying again in July. I did come across two job opportunities from July to August, but unfortunately one of them worked with chemicals that seemed to irritate my skin, and the other job only lasted a day and a half as they let go of about thirty of us when they had no work all of a sudden. Since then, I’ve been applying like mad to several places. I am with two local temp job placement agencies, and they are of no help, even after one place told me they had 20+ job openings. All I seem to hear is “they are responding slowly” when I call weekly to find out about a job they sent my resume to, which happens to be the same job they are talking about every week. I even went to a job interview last month that I had full on experience in, and they stated in their ad that they wanted people with experience and they needed tons of people. I was told the positions had been filled when I called to see if I was hired. A week later, and still to this day, I see the ad weekly still needing people to work for them.
So what’s bugging me is that, it’s come to my conclusion that no one wants to hire me because I’m in the army. It saddens me that I’m about to give my 30 days notice on my apartment, and move my belongings into storage, and I’m going to bum it on my grandma’s couch till who knows how long. You never hear about a person looking for a reliable job, you hear about jobs looking for reliable people. But since no one wants the liability of employing someone who is in the army, I’m not sure what else to do. I’ve even been offered to switch to active duty, but I’m not an active army kind of girl. I’m hoping to hear from two decent jobs I recently applied to in the last few days, out of the dozens I already have. I’m running out of optimism, I just don’t understand how I can possibly go to war, and could possibly die for our country, but yet I can’t get a job in the country I’m fighting my life for.
