Is counting Jr's 17 "Non-COT" wins kind of like comparing apples to oranges?
Dale Earnhardt Jr is touted as "one of the best drivers in history" because of his 18 wins. In fact he has only one win in a COT car.
Isn't the constant drumbeat of these 18 wins irrelevant considering we have a totally different car? Junior has not proven a thing in the COT, except that NASCAR allots him more gasoline than the other drivers. (see Michigan spring race 2008)
I know you will say that there are other drivers in the same boat. However, JG, JJ, MM, Kyle B, Kurt B, Matt K, TS, GB, CE, all have multiple COT wins.
Jr is living off of a record that is as relevant today as breaker points in an ignition system. Perhaps we should take more of an "unbiased" view of Juniors actual accomplishments.
This is an actual question, it has a queston mark and everything.
The reason I asked it is because of all the articles being written about Jr's famed 18 wins. Heck JJ has 18 wins in chase races alone, where is his glory?
I don't know of anyone with intelligence considering Dale as "one of the best drivers in history."
There are a bunch of drivers with more wins ahead of Dale on that list, about 36 of them. Matt Kenseth also has 18 wins, but he also managed to win one championship and finish 2nd in another.
Let's ignore the new Cup car for a moment and look at the fact that he's got only a few wins in the last five years, only one worth points towards a championship. Didn't amount to much his last two seasons at DEI, and has been an embarrassment to the Hendrick organization. I don't think the switch to a new car has had much of an effect. It's not always about wins. He can't even manage to run in the top 10 or 15 most of the time.
