The Montreal Canadiens are based in Montreal, Quebec Canada. The club is known as Le Club de Hockey Canadien. The team is also known by French names, which are Les Canadiens, Le Bleu-Blanc-Rouge, La Sainte- Flanelle, Le Tricolore, Les Glorieus, Les Habitants and Le Grand Club. Their English name is Habs. An Ottawa businessman J. Ambrose O Brien founded club De Hockey Canadien in 1909. The first game was played in NHL in 1910. The Canadiens won their first Stanley Cup in 1916. They defeated the Portland Rosebuds of Pacific Coast Hockey Association. The next 4 years were a low-lying period for the team. In 1917 they lost the Stanley Cup to Seattle and their star Player Joe Hall died that season. In 1924 the Canadiens again resurfaced defeating the Calgary Tigers and the Vancouver Maroons. Howie Morenz, Aurel Joliat and Billy Boucher were the stars of the game. The Habs won their third cup in 1930 defeating the Boston Bruins. In 1931 the Habs beat the Ottawa Senators and Chicago Black Hawks to win their fourth cup.
In 1936-37 the Canadiens set the second best record in NHL. However that season they lost one of their star players. Morenz died at the age of 34 due to multiple fractures and a stroke on March 8 1937. In 1944 under the guidance of coach Dick Irvin the Canadiens had the Cup to their name once again. Maurice “ Rocket” Richard, Toe Blake and Elmer Lach were the stars of the game. Maurice went on to hit 1000 career penalty minutes in NHL history. Richard scored 50 goals in 50 games in 1945 becoming the first player to do so in NHL History. He was awarded the Hart Memorial Trophy as the NHL Most Valuable Player in 1947. In 1946 the Habs won their sixth Stanley Cup.
The 1950’s were the best period for the Canadiens. The entire decade they made it to the Stanley Cup finals winning it six times. Montreal Canadiens tickets sale soared with their increasing fan clubs. In 1955 Toe Blake took over as the team coach. Legendary players such as Jean Beliveau, Dickie Moore, Doug Harvey, Bernie Geoffrion and Jacques Plante were a part of the team then. The Habs won two cups consecutively in 1965 and 1966. In 1971 they won another cup defeating the Black Hawks. That season Ken Dryden was the rookie. The next two decades saw some great wins. In 1993 the Habs won their 24th cup against the Los Angeles kings.
