Protect Your Furniture and Valuables
Technically the most absorbent coasters are the cork coasters. Cork coasters have always been used because they do sponge up condensation from the bottom of glasses and also from any spills. Tile, metal and glass coasters have no absorption at all. If a drink is spilled or if there is condensation on the glass then it can trickle past the rim of the coaster and damage the surface below.
To some it might seem absurd to spend money on coasters (http://www.thirstycoasters.com/servlet/-strse-Dining-&-Entertaining/Categories) at all but they can be of great convenience to you when it comes to protecting your fine furniture from damage. Water stains can be very difficult to remove from some wood surfaces.
Any type of table can use a coaster. It simply helps to stop accidents. If water does get on wood, for example, the white residue left on the wood can be ugly looking. Over time this can require that the entire table be refinished.
The longer that a glass sits on the table without a coaster on it the more potential it has to stain or damage the wood which is why it is a good idea to invest in absorbent coasters.
Just a note - although cardboard coasters are absorbent to some extent they are not as good at soaking up the moisture as the cork coasters. This is why even wood coasters Ares sometimes inset with cork circles. Another material can act as the frame for the coaster but as long as the inside of the coaster is cork, then you know you have bought a legitimate set of absorbent coasters.
Laminated tables will rise up from their base and start lifting and peeling if an absorbent coaster is not used to protect the table. Plastic or acrylic tables can also be easily scratched if absorbent coasters (http://www.thirstycoasters.com/servlet/-strse-Coast-to-Coast/Categories) are not used to protect the finish of it. The more highly lacquered the wood table is the less likely it is to become water stained.
A well known problem with coasters that are made of cork or cardboards has always been that the bottom of the glass can stick to them. This happens very easily with coasters made of tiles as well. The bottom of the coaster sticks to the glass and then becomes loose.
If the coaster is made out of ceramic or tile it smashes or breaks. If it s made out metal or tin and this happens it is actually quite dangerous. You could cut yourself on the thin tin edge of the coaster or damage furniture
Who would have ever thought that stone was absorbent? Sandstone is one of the better materials for absorbent coasters as it soaks up moisture and spilled liquid. Sandstone coasters are also very beautiful! It is popular currently to put Navajo images or landscapes on these types of coasters.
One of the handiest developments in the industry of tile coasters is a material called AbsorbaStone. These are coasters that have a textured finish that keeps them from bonding with the bottom of the glass if moisture condenses and creates suction. This type of coaster is usually backed by cork or rubber to keep them from sliding across the table.
